  • Aspen Circle on Aspen Ridge in Colorado

    Aspen Circle

"Aspen Circle" is what I call this interesting spot I found along Aspen ridge, which covers the mountain range on the east side of the Arkansas river, just south of the mountain town of Buena Vista, Colorado. To get there was not easy. A forest service road will take you from Trout creek pass along Highway 24, all the way to Salida, Colorado, which is about about 30 miles away. The location of this shot, Aspen ridge, is about half way between the two towns. As I found out,  you can discover many aspen covered areas that offer photographic opportunity while hiking along that ridge. On this Autumn day I found this aspen circle that reminded me of a Temple. I exposed Fujichrome Velvia film at f32 @ 1/15 second. Equipment: Tachihara 4×5 field view camera, Caltar 90mm f6.8, Bogen 3028 tripod, Pentax spotmeter.
  • Aspen Glow

A low Autumn sun filtered through the Autumn leaves creates a spectacular scene in the Colorado rockies. Highway 550, the million dollar highway, offers large swaths of Aspen groves. A slope away from the road and the Aspens growing above the road made for a easy place to set-up and compose for the middle aspen detail. I exposed Fujichrome velvia at f22 ⅔ for 1/15 second. Equipment: Tachihara field view camera, 210 Komura f6.3, Bogen 3028 tripod, Pentax spotter.

  • Aspen Grove yellow

Aspen ridge, surrounded by the Collegiate peaks, the Arkansas river valley on the west side and the Arkansas hills on the east which leads down into South park, Colorado. In the fall, Aspen ridge becomes a large ribbon of yellow and red across the hill side of the Arkansas hills. While hiking along Aspen ridge I observed One Aspen standing out against the rest of the grove. I exposed Fujichrome velvia f/32 @ 1/15 of a second. Equipment: Tachihara 4×5 field view camera, Schneider 150mm f5.6, Bogen tripod, Pentax spotmeter

  • Autumn Aspens

Aspen Ridge, bordering Browns Canyon National Monument in Chaffee County, Colorado is worthy of many trips and each scene is going to present a different feel and lend itself to a different composition. I have visited this scene several times and have come away with different shots. For this shot, I exposed Fujichrome Velvia at f/32 for 1/15 Second. Equipment: Tachihara field view camera, Caltar 90mm f6.8, Bogen tripod 3028, Pentax Spotmeter.
  • Autumn Foliage

Cottonwood Creek flows out of the Sawatch Mountains and into the Arkansas River in Colorado. In the fall the water is clear, the foliage is inspiring and the air is crisp. I found this bank with a lot of color and exposed Fujichrome Velvia @ f/32 @ ¼ second. Equipment: Tachihara field view camera, Komura 210 f6.3, Bogen 3028 tripod, Pentax spot meter.
  • Colorado Gold

The Colorado Gold fields of the 1800’s brought a great number of people to Colorado and made the state a lot of money. But, probably not as much as the Aspen fall color. While driving thru Bassam Park, near Buena Vista, Colorado, I noticed this group of Aspens that seems to be layered by size. I exposed Fujichrome Velvia at f/32 @ 1/15 second. Equipment: Tachihara field view camera, Schneider 150mm f5.6, Bogen 3028 tripod, Pentax spot meter.
  • Crystal Mill

The Crystal Mill, also called Dead Horse Mill, is located on the Crystal river just outside of the small Colorado town of Marble. The mill is one of the most photographed spots in Colorado. The autumn aspens encompassing the mill really sets it apart from its surroundings. I exposed Fujichrome Velvia at f/45 @ ⅛ second. Equipment: Tachihara field view camera, Caltar 90mm f6.8, Bogen 3028 tripod, Pentax spotmeter.
  • Crystal River

The Crystal river Begins near the town of Marble, Colorado; once known as the marble capitol of America. The marble used in the Lincoln memorial and the tomb of the unknown soldier came from Marble, Colorado. The Crystal river must have been named that because the water is crystal clear. I found this scene along its bank and photographed it on Fujichrome Avia film at f32 @ ⅛ second. Equipment: Tachihara field view camera, Schneider 150mm f5.6, Bogen 3028 tripod Pentax spotmeter.
